This December, we celebrated an inspiring milestone, the graduation of the Online Zero Waste Academy Class of 2024! This year, the academy received an overwhelming 247 applications from passionate individuals worldwide, eager to drive the zero-waste movement forward, a testament to the rising global commitment to zero waste.
The academy graduation brought together participants from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to a zero waste future. Through the program, participants explored the concepts and tools essential for starting or enhancing zero-waste implementation in their cities and communities.
We were deeply honored to have renowned leaders in the zero-waste movement, whose expertise and vision have been pivotal in advancing this cause. Froilan Grate, Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator and Executive Director of GAIA Philippines, delivered powerful insights that inspired participants to push boundaries in achieving a zero waste world. Niven Reddy, GAIA Africa Regional Coordinator, captivated the audience with his keynote, “The Zero Waste Movement,” highlighting the critical role of collective action in systemic change. Their contributions underscored the importance of global collaboration and shared knowledge in growing the zero-waste movement.
As part of the Online Zero Waste Academy Graduation 2024, we were delighted to honor outstanding participants who demonstrated exceptional dedication and creativity throughout the program. This year, we’ve categorized the awards into five key areas that reflect the heart of zero waste principles and innovation.
Best Zero Waste Pledge award was received by Yunitasari (Olla), from Nol Sampah, Indonesia, celebrating the most inspiring and actionable commitment to zero waste. Best Information, Education & Communication (IEC) Material award went to Benedict Fosu Arthur from Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Ghana, for creating impactful materials that educate and engage communities.
Abdallah Mikulu from Mazingira Plus (Tanzania) won the award for Best Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Design. Best Waste Assessment and Brand Audit (WABA) award was received by Aaditya Aryal from Global IME Bank (Nepal), for excellence in conducting comprehensive waste assessments and brand audits. Hélène Carmen Prinslida MPASSI ANZAMBE from Zero Waste Senegal was named the Overall Best Participant of the Zero Waste Academy Online Training 2024.
These exemplary participants have set a high standard for innovation and commitment, inspiring others to take bold steps toward achieving zero-waste goals in their communities. Graduates will be linked with their respective regional Zero Waste Coalitions and Alliances, ensuring ongoing collaboration, support, and access to opportunities as they implement change on the ground
